Paintballs – What’s Best For Your Paintball Gun?

There are numerous brands of paintballs on the market today. Choosing the right paintball for your marker can mean the difference when it comes to accuracy and distance. The most popular size paintballs produced today are 0.68 caliber. This is a general size and although called ‘.68′, the actual size can range from .675 – .695 caliber.

What makes one paintball better than the next? Why are some paintballs more expensive than others? These are questions that we get on a regular basis. The answer is simple; you get what you pay for. Higher priced paintballs are normally tightly regulated in the quality control department. Better quality paint is more consistent in size from ball to ball. The shells are more reliable and can withstand the burst of air needed to propel the ball out of the paintball gun yet thin enough to burst on impact. Their shells are also more spherical allowing a straighter flight path. More expensive paintballs normally have better paint fill as well. Better fill involves paint that is washable, comes in brighter, high marking colors and is harder to wipe off in the field.

Paintballs are affected by humidity and moisture. Extremes in temperature and atmospheric pressure can change the consistency of the fill and cause the paintball shell to swell or shrink. This will likely change performance characteristics. Quality paintballs are manufactured to resist the affects of humidity and moisture, resulting in better, more consistent performance during extreme conditions. Paintballs should always be stored in a dry, cool place. Most manufacturers recommend storing paint within the range of 59 – 86 degrees with little or no humidity. Do not store paint for long periods of time. Paintballs can develop shell ‘flat spots’ if left to sit too long on the shelf.

How do you know what paintball is right for your gun? We normally recommend buying a few small quantities of different brands and trying them out. You will be amazed at the difference. Matching your barrel size to the correct size is crucial. There is a very simple method that anyone can use to determine the right ‘paint to barrel’ match. Visit the link below and see how you can easily determine what size and brand are your best bet for better accuracy and distance on the paintball field.
